Did you know that nearly one-third of adult Americans volunteer at least once a year? Volunteering connects you with others in your community and can counteract the effects of stress, anxiety, and depression.
If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, here are three organizations near our Chapel Hill student apartments that are always looking for friendly volunteers:
Orange Literacy is a volunteer organization that strives to make literacy available to all. It helps adults meet their education and employment goals by offering instruction in reading, writing, and GED preparation. In 2018, five students earned their GEDs while 28 others became United States citizens.
More than 150 volunteers support Orange Literacy every year. There are several opportunities available, including Adult Basic Education tutoring. These tutors offer one-on-one instruction in reading, writing, and basic math.
The Ronald McDonald House helps parents whose children are receiving long-term medical care. It offers emotional support and overnight shelter for families. The cost of a room is minimal, and no one will be turned away due to financial costs.
The volunteers play an important role and work anywhere from once a year to once a week. Duties include answering phones, preparing the rooms, and maintaining the gardens.
Established in 1970, the Animal Protection Society of Durham takes in nearly 5,000 surrendered, stray, and abused animals every year. It provides cats and dogs with loving care until they find a permanent home. The shelter also offers community outreach and is a leader in building bonds between people and animals.
Volunteers work at least eight hours a month and are crucial in helping with daily operations. Duties include cleaning, socializing the animals, and walking dogs.
